In the 1890s a man called Eugene Schieffelin released 100 starlings into New York City's Central Park so that New Yorkers might have the chance to see every bird mentioned in William Shakespeare's plays. How wonderful!
The image of the starling and its latin name, 'sturnus vulgarise', are encased under glass and set into silver plated cups.
The chain is silver plated.
